CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman
Katherine Englert scored six goals Thursday and junior
Jane Symmes racked up nine points as the Kenyon College Ladies lacrosse team cruised to a 22-4 victory over the Saint Vincent College Bearcats. The win completed a successful, season-starting, two-game sweep for the Ladies at the National Training Center.
Although Kenyon (2-0) thoroughly dominated the game against Saint Vincent (0-3), the Bearcats were showing some signs of serious fatigue after dropping a 13-12 overtime game to Mount Saint Mary in a game that took place earlier in the day. Scheduling and travel problems forced Saint Vincent into playing the unique, but burdensome, doubleheader.
Kenyon knew the Bearcats would be tired, so it wasted little time in attacking the net. The Ladies received goals from
Caroline Shipman, Symmes, Englert, and
Abby Coleman to sprint to a 4-0 lead within the game's first seven minutes. Saint Vincent cut that lead in half over the next five minutes, but Kenyon responded with five straight tallies, including three by Englert, to move ahead 9-2.
Before the teams could reach the half, Kenyon poured in three more goals, two from
Molly Hunt and one more from Englert. That rush put the Ladies ahead, 12-4, at the break.
The Bearcats last score of the game came at the 9:42 mark of the first half. The Ladies shut down Saint Vincent for nearly 40 minutes to close out the contest. Kenyon keeper
Meredith Bentsen had to make nine saves, but most of the action she witnessed occurred in the first half. The Bearcats managed just five shots in the second half and were out-shot, 39-17, for the game. Freshman
Allie Dumas relieved Bentsen and played the final 14 minutes between the pipes. She made one save in that time.
The Ladies amassed ten more goals in the second half. Shipman, Symmes,
Kelley Russell, and
Charley Myers each tallied two over those final 30 minutes. When the smoke cleared, Englert had a total of six goals and an assist, while Symmes had four goals and five assists. Shipman finished the game with three goals and three assists and both Russell and Hunt had two goals and an assist.
Allie McLane also had a three-point game, notching one goal and two assists.
The Ladies now return home to play their first game of the season at Mavec Field. They'll host Centre College at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Junior Jane Symmes racked up four goals, five assists, and 11 draw controls Thursday.
Her efforts helped power the Ladies lacrosse team to a 22-4 win over Saint Vincent College.
