SPRINGFIELD, OHIO – Wittenberg University (4-1, 1-0 NCAC) dealt Kenyon College (5-1, 0-1 NCAC) its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon at Edwards-Maurer Field in a North Coast Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game.
The Tigers jumped ahead 7-1 in the first half before eventually prevailing 19-9. It was the first time all season Kenyon didn't score at least 10 goals.
First-half action saw Wittenberg attain a 2-0 lead in the first 18 minutes of play as Victoria Zysik and Becca Joseph each scored.
Kenyon finally got on the scoreboard with just under 12 minutes left in the half as
Abby Coleman scored on a free-position shot. As it turned out though, it was the Ladies' only goal of the half.
After the Ladies goal, Wittenberg seized command scoring five unanswered goals. Witt attacker Logan Warye scored three of them.
The second half started well for Kenyon as they scored four goals and cut the deficit to 7-5.
Allie McLane,
Kelley Russell,
Kat Englert and Coleman each scored for the Ladies in the first three-and-a-half minutes of action.
But the fast start didn't last for Kenyon as Wittenberg responded with an 8-0 run and took a 13-5 lead after Warye scored again.
There wasn't a Kenyon response this time and the Ladies fell by a 19-9 count.
Warye and Joseph led the Tigers with five goals apiece while Carrie Kubasta had five assists. Witt out-shot Kenyon 30-17 in on-goal attempts.
The Ladies were led by Coleman's three goals while
Jane Symmes and McLane each tallied two.
Kenyon will try and rebound March 26 when they host College of Wooster at 5 p.m.
