GAMBIER, Ohio – The College of Wooster (5-2, 2-0 NCAC) rallied from a 12-8 deficit midway through the second half to edge Kenyon College (5-2, 0-1 NCAC) 14-13 Thursday evening in a North Coast Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game at Mavec Field.
Shelby Stone led the Fighting Scots with five goals, including the game-winner in overtime, while Ellie Hudson-Heck contributed four.
The Ladies were led by
Jane Symmes' five goals and seven groundballs while
Allie McLane scored three times.
Things started in Kenyon's favor as the team gained a 2-0 lead about five minutes into the contest after goals from Symmes and McLane. But Wooster found a little stride and tied the game at 4 with 14 minutes left after Stone scored. That early rally turned out to be the theme of the contest for the Fighting Scots.
After a Helena Enders goal gave Wooster a 5-4 advantage, the Ladies responded with scores from Symmes,
Kat Englert, and
Caroline Shipman to put Kenyon back on top 7-5. They maintained that lead the rest of the half and took a 9-6 advantage into the break.
Midway through the second half, the Ladies found themselves up by its biggest margin (12-8) after a Symmes goal.
But after that, the Ladies didn't find any offense and allowed the Fighting Scots to get back in it.
Wooster started its rally with 11:34 left in the game as Ashley Parry assisted Stone to bring the score to 12-9 Kenyon.
The Fighting Scots completed its four-goal deficit with six minutes remaining as Stone found Abby Sziachta for a score that tied the game at 13.
After the game was tied at 13, both teams had opportunities to score.
Kenyon had three shots after a Wooster yellow card with 1:45 left but those shots by
Abby Coleman, Symmes, and Englert did not find the back of the net. The Fighting Scots also appeared to have gained a 14-13 lead after Stone caused a turnover in front of the Ladies' pipe and shot to the back of the net, but officials overturned the goal after a violation with Stone's stick.
The first overtime saw Shipman and Englert get shots on-goal that were saved by Wooster's Isabel Perman while Molly Sennett attempted a shot that was saved by
Meredith Bentsen.
The second overtime resulted in Wooster's winning goal from Stone about 35 seconds into the second 3-minute session. Symmes attempted to tie the game at 14 with a free-position shot but that attempt went off the post and Kenyon didn't find another shot after that.
The Ladies will try and bounce back March 28 when they host Augustana (IL) College at 12 p.m.
