Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Solid goalkeeping stymies Lords in loss at Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team continued its struggles away from home Wednesday night at Otterbein University. The Lords ran into a hot goalkeeper and were held to just seven goals on 54 shots during a 10-7 non-conference loss to the host Cardinals.

Kenyon is now 4-4 overall and 0-3 in road games. For Otterbein, which improved to 5-3 overall, the victory was its first ever against the Lords, who were previously 5-0 against the Cardinals.

The Lords out-shot the Cardinals 54-30, but Otterbein sophomore goalkeeper James Gundling tied his career-high with 23 saves to spoil the Kenyon effort. Gundling got in a groove right away, as he saved ten of 15 first-quarter shots from the swarming Kenyon offense.

The Lords were able to squeak one shot from senior Pat Kim past Gundling in those first 15 minutes, but Otterbein fired back with four straight scores, two in the first quarter and two more in the second. The Lords went nearly 25 minutes before their next score, but finally got it in when senior Nick Lenard rifled in a man-up goal with 27 seconds left to go in the half.

The teams played a fairly even third quarter, but Otterbein posted a slim 3-2 advantage on the scoreboard and put the Lords in a 7-4 hole with just 15 minutes remaining.

That margin was extended even further when the Cardinals scored three of the first four goals in the fourth quarter. Robbie Guiliano netted one of those goals and was the catalyst of the Otterbein offense all night. He wound up finding the Kenyon net four times with three of those coming in the second half.

Kenyon's seven goals were scored by six different players. Freshman J.T. Meyer was the only Lord to score twice. Sophomore Robert Jacobs had two assists, while both Alex Lopez and Fritz Waine contributed a goal and an assist.

While the Lords offense was stonewalled by Gundling, the team couldn't find a solution at the face-off square either. With their top face-off man sidelined due to injury, the Lords trotted out three different players to take over the task. Combined, those three went 4-for-21.

The Lords will remain on the road for their next game, which is a conference contest at Wabash College, a first-year varsity program. The game is schedule for a 1 p.m. start at Mud Hollow Stadium.
