Lords offense held in check by Cougar hurlers

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Batting out of the leadoff spot, shortstop Max Heldman had three hits Wednesday for the Kenyon College baseball team. The rest of the team's lineup, however, combined for just three more hits as the Lords fell, 6-1, to the No. 24-ranked Misericordia University Cougars.

With the exception of Heldman, the Kenyon men struggled to solve Misericordia starter Mike Turton, a freshman right-hander. Turton went five innings to earn the win. He gave up just five hits and two walks, while striking out four and allowing just the one earned run.

The Lords, who now own a 3-2 record, collected their sole run in the first inning of the game. Heldman started things out with a double and advanced to third on a groundout from classmate Matt von Roemer. Jake Dunn then stepped to the plate and ripped a single up the middle to score Heldman.

Later in the game, von Roemer and Phillip Nam accounted for the other two Kenyon hits, but the Lords were only able to get two runners into scoring position over the last eight innings.

When Turton exited the game, sophomore Garrett Pelko took over and threw four scoreless innings to pick up a save. He yielded just one hit and one walk for the Cougars, who are now 4-1.

Misericordia, a team coming off a conference championship and a 31-15-1 record that included a pair of victories in the 2014 NCAA DIII Tournament, had three players produce two-hit games. At the top of the Cougars' lineup was Chris Boroch, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base.

Like the Lords, the Cougars did most of their offensive work early in the game. They jumped on Kenyon starting pitcher Josh Jacobvitz for three runs on four hits, a walk, and a wild pitch. Jacobvitz settled down after that and gave up just two more hits through four more innings of work.

Junior Spencer Byers threw the final three innings for Kenyon and he, too, gave up three runs. One of those was unearned, thanks to Kenyon's first and only error of the game.

Kenyon has Thursday off and will return to the diamond Friday with a scheduled doubleheader against Immaculata University. Game one gets underway at 9 a.m.
