GAMBIER, Ohio – Freshman
Kat Englert scored six goals for the second straight game and junior
Jane Symmes notched her second-straight nine-point contest as the Kenyon College Ladies offense steamrolled the Centre College Colonels, 21-14, during a non-conference women's lacrosse contest at McBride Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Ladies, who averaged 12.53 goals per game in the 2014 season, are off to a 3-0 start this season and averaging a whopping 20.33 goals per game. A good portion of that improvement has do with the play of Englert and Symmes, who already have 15 and 12 goals, respectively.
Englert scored two of the Ladies' first four goals against Centre.
Allie McLane tacked on two more and the Kenyon women had a 6-4 lead with 9:24 left in the first half. Englert added one more before the half and so did sophomore
Abby Coleman. The Colonels, however, would not fade away. Jacqueline Anderson scored three first-half goals for Centre and kept her team in the game. At the break, Kenyon possessed an 8-5 lead.
Kenyon never did give up the lead, but the Colonels managed to grab a share of it. When second-half play began, Centre went on a 5-2 run to knot the game at 10-10. Kenyon got a free-position goal from
Gia Biaggi, but Centre replied again to tie things up at 11-11 with 18:15 remaining.
A sense of urgency set in for the Ladies and they responded quickly. Symmes gave the Ladies a 12-11 lead and
Caroline Shipman produced some breathing room with two more Kenyon tallies. After Centre netted one, Englert rattled off three of the next four Kenyon goals to launch the Ladies to an 18-12 lead with about 12 minutes to play.
Shipman, who finished with three goals and two assists scored again and Symmes wrapped up the Ladies' day with the team's final two scores. She finished the game with five goals, four assists, three groundballs, and ten draw controls. Englert's six goals were accompanied by a groundball and five draws. McLane, Coleman, and
Kelley Russell each tacked on two goals to the Kenyon total.
The Ladies held a 39-27 advantage in shots, a slim 20-17 edge in groundballs, and a more convincing 23-14 margin in draw controls.
Junior Jane Symmes produced her second-straight nine-point game. She did so Sunday with five goals and
four assists during the Ladies' 21-14 win over Centre College.
