Offense shines as Ladies win two more at Gene Cusic Classic

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – With a team batting average of .418 during the day, the Kenyon College softball team picked up a pair of wins to improve their record to 7-3 Sunday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Classic. Kenyon defeated Alverno College 7-4 before rolling University of Minnesota-Morris 10-1.

GAME ONE

A four-run second inning gave the Ladies early momentum against the Inferno Sunday morning at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.

It started when Chelsea Delaney homered to center field giving Kenyon a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame with the bases loaded, Madi Maldonado drew a walk and Maddy Stark followed that with a two-run double down the right field line to push the Ladies ahead 4-0.

The Inferno cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second as Sam Kasprzak singled up the middle bringing in one and another Alverno base-runner scored after an error in the outfield.

That was the closest the Inferno got the rest of the game.

Liz Paterra added an RBI single in the fifth and Toni Miller delivered a sacrifice bunt that scored another to move the Ladies back up by four, 6-2.

Kenyon's final run came off the bat of Lindsey Susolik who flied out to right scoring Hayley Howard.

Five different players recorded multiple hits for Kenyon while Sylvie Thomas earned her fourth win in the circle tossing a complete game and striking out three.

GAME TWO

The Ladies matched their season high with 16 hits in their 10-1 romp over the Cougars during the second game of the day.

Kenyon led throughout and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second.

Paterra started the scoring with an RBI double to center field and three batters later Howard drew a bases-loaded walk allowing Jane Ghublikian to score. Kenyon added another run after a Minnesota-Morris error. Stark's fielder's choice drove in another for the Ladies' final score in the second.

The Cougars were held in check on the offensive end and never were able to make the game interesting. From the third inning to the seventh, they got just one player on base. That came on an Autumn Mahoney single in the bottom of the fifth.

Stark was superb in the circle for Kenyon. She tossed all seven innings, scattered four hits, struck out six and induced seven flyouts and groundouts.

The Ladies had one more big inning which came in the seventh when they scored six runs. Paterra hit her second double of the day scoring Molly O'Connor. Danielle Elizarraraz also had a double that plated two Kenyon base-runners. Stark, Maldonado, and Ghublikian also connected with run-scoring hits.

Six different players recorded multiple hits for Kenyon as Amanda Coyle led the team with three of her own.

Kenyon will try and stay hot March 9 when they face Drew University at 9 a.m. and Rockford University at 11 a.m. in Ft. Myers.
