CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team opened up a huge 10-0 lead Saturday at Schueler Field and then emptied its bench before ringing up a lopsided 23-3 victory over the College of Mount Saint Joseph Lions. The non-conference win improved the Lords' overall record to 8-5.
Kenyon began the game with its regular starters on field and they rushed out to a 7-0 lead before coach
Doug Misarti started handing out valuable game experience to reserve players. Six different players scored goals in Kenyon's opening rush. Sophomore
Robert Jacobs, the team's scoring leader this season, pumped in two goals. Both
Nick Lenard and
Jonah Florence scored one goal and assisted on another, while
J.T. Meyer served up two assists during the opening moments of the game.
Before the first quarter expired, Kenyon starters were beginning to exit the game, but the Lords' reserves just keep firing in goals. At the end of the first, the Lords held a 10-0 lead and at halftime they had a 15-3 advantage. Kenyon scored the game's first 14 goals and it wasn't until the 5:19 mark of the second quarter that the Lions first got on the board after taking advantage of a man-up situation.
Not much changed in the second half. Kenyon dominated every facet of the game, including holding the Lions scoreless for the final 32 minutes of play. Junior
Patrick Shevelson got the start and the win in goal for the Lords. He was followed by
Fitz Hugh Lee,
Noah Gurzenski, and
Gabriel Avis. All three back-ups played at least eight minutes and made at least one save.
Kenyon's offense out-shot Mount St. Joseph 64-22 and the Lords won 21 of 30 face-offs. Junior
C.J. Clinkscales won 19 of the 26 face-offs he attempted and he also notched a goal and three assists for the Kenyon men.
The Lords scoring leader for the day was freshman
Rory Shoemaker. He led the way by netting the first five goals of his collegiate career. In addition to Shoemaker, Lenard, Jacobs, and Florence other double-digit scorers for the Lords were
Josh Galardi, who had three goals and an assist, and
Chris Ferraro, who tallied two goals and an assist.
Pierce Kraft and
Rob Guldenschuh each chipped in with a goal and two assists.
In all, Kenyon had 32 players hit the field and 14 different players recorded at least one point against Mount St. Joseph, which fell to 3-7 with the loss.
