GAMBIER, Ohio –
Amanda Coyle provided some late-inning heroics for Kenyon College (24-8, 5-5 NCAC) in Sunday's North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Wittenberg University Sunday afternoon. The Ladies won 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth before falling 6-3 in game two.
GAME ONE It was a defensive struggle for most of the opener between the Ladies and Tigers. Through the first four innings, only a
Nicole Horita RBI groundout in the first tallied the only score of the game.
Pitchers Chelsea Zang of Wittenberg and
Maddy Stark of Kenyon did a solid job in the circle. Through five innings, the hurlers scattered eight hits and the lone run was unearned.
Kenyon extended its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth as
Lindsey Susolik singled through the right sid scoring Stark.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the sixth as Charlee Clark smacked a two-out homer to left field. Wittenberg then tied the game at 2 in the seventh after a hard ground ball bounced away from Coyle at short allowing pinch runner Ashley Knapp to score.
In the eighth, Wittenberg looked primed to grab the lead with two runners on base and two outs. A shot to right field from Lindsey Blair nearly dropped but a great diving catch from Danielle Elizarrarz ended the scoring threat.
After Wittenberg stranded a runner in scoring position in the ninth, Kenyon took advantage.
Liz Paterra started the bottom half of the frame with a single. Horita followed by laying down a bunt on the third-base line which resulted in a throwing error and moved the Kenyon base-runners to second and third, respectively. Coyle followed with the game-winning sacrifice fly to center pushing the Ladies ahead to victory, 3-2.
GAME TWO The Tigers bounced back in the second game scoring the last three runs of the game in the fifth and sixth innings.
Wittenberg jumped out to a 3-1 lead with a run in the first and a pair of RBI doubles from Abby Baker and Zang in the third.
The Ladies responded to tie the game in the fourth as
Hayley Howard and
Madi Maldonado each had run-scoring singles.
But the latter innings belonged to Wittenberg as Casey Hobbs doubled to center field scoring Shannon Lance in the fifth and Lance followed in the sixth with a two-run two-bagger to left center to get the final tally.
Kenyon's last chance in the seventh saw Zang earn her first save of the season as she retired all three Kenyon batters.
Next up for the Ladies is a conference doubleheader against Denison University April 14 starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Kenyon Softball Complex.
