GRANVILLE, Ohio – Whitney Powel ignited a five-goal run midway through the second half of Tuesday's women's lacrosse game and propelled the Denison University Big Red to a 14-9 decision over the visiting Kenyon College Ladies. Powel, who finished the game with one goal and six assists, logged four of those assists during that game-changing run.
The loss ended a brief two-game win streak for Kenyon and dropped the Ladies' records to 7-4 overall and 2-3 within North Coast Athletic Conference play. Denison evened up its record at 6-6 and jumped ahead of Kenyon with a 3-2 conference mark.
Thanks mainly to the offense of junior
Jane Symmes and the defense of senior goalkeeper
Meredith Bentsen, the Ladies played an even first half with the Big Red and got to halftime locked in a 5-5 draw. Symmes had four of those five Kenyon first-half goals, while Bentsen made 11 saves in her first 30 minutes between the pipes.
Things changed drastically in the second half. Both teams went scoreless for ten minutes. Then, starting at the 19:45 mark, Denison had five different players score goals over the course of the next 13 minutes.
To their credit, the Ladies weathered the storm and responded. Kenyon scored four of the game's next five goals and shrunk its deficit to two goals (11-9) with a little more than eight minutes remaining. Symmes notched her fifth and final goal of the game to start that Kenyon rally.
Kat Englert,
Allie McLane, and
Caroline Shipman followed up with goals of their own.
Shipman's goal, which hit the back of the Denison net with 8:11 left on the clock, would be Kenyon's final tally. Denison moved on to score three goals in the final three minutes to put things away.
The Big Red out shot Kenyon, 36-25, but a total of 16 saves from Bentsen kept the Ladies in the hunt. That total was a season-high for Bentsen, who now has 92 saves this season and 445 for her career. Her counterpart, Becca Jones, made 11 saves for Denison. Jones played a huge role in free position situations by limiting the Ladies to just three goals in 11 shots.
Symmes' five goals gave her 39 for the season and put her just behind Englert, who scored twice and has a team-best 47 goals for the season. Symmes also latched on to a game-high eight groundballs and forced three Denison turnovers.
The Ladies have three games left in the regular season with the next one being at DePauw University on Saturday. That game, originally scheduled for noon start, was bumped up to an 11:45 a.m. start.
Junior Jane Symmes scored six of Kenyon's nine goals in Tuesday's 14-9 loss at Denison.
