Ladies win road doubleheader at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies (28-8, 9-5 NCAC) softball team picked up a pair of North Coast Athletic Conference wins at College of Wooster (14-14, 5-5 NCAC) Saturday afternoon by identical 5-2 scores at Galpin Park. With the wins, Kenyon moved into third place in the standings with two conference games remaining. The top four qualify for the tournament beginning May 1.

GAME ONE

Kenyon pulled away from Wooster in the final two innings after the score was tied at 2 heading to the sixth.

Before the late run, each team had scored twice. The Ladies took the lead in the top of the first after Lindsey Susolik socked her team-leading seventh homer of the year to left center plating Jane Ghublikian.

After three-and-a-half scoreless innings, Wooster responded to tie the game in the fifth as Carly Schoenstein ripped a two-run single with the bases loaded.

But following the fifth, Kenyon pitcher Maddy Stark scattered just one hit the rest of the way and allowed her offense to come through.

Kenyon moved ahead 3-2 in the sixth as Chelsea Delaney connected with a run-scoring single. Stark and Ghublikian tallied the Ladies' final two runs as they drove in Danielle Elizarrarz and Hayley Howard.

Stark earned her 18th win of the year in game one breaking her own record of 17 that was set in 2013. Offensively, Ghublikian was the only player to record multiple hits as she went 4-for-4.

GAME TWO

The Ladies led throughout and got all the run support they needed in the top of the first.

Delaney hit a two-run double to right center with two outs that plated Stark and Madi Maldonado.  In the next sequence, Emily Olson pinch ran, stole third and then rounded home after a throwing error by Wooster's pitcher.

The Fighting Scots cut into the 3-0 deficit in the second as Jenna Kendall delivered an RBI single. After Kenyon added another run in the top of the fourth, Wooster responded as Stephenie Little connected with a run-scoring double and moved the score to 4-2.

Once again though, Stark shut down her opponent in the latter parts of the game. The Fighting Scots managed just one hit from the fifth to the end of the game.

Kenyon added its fifth and final run in the sixth on a Maldonado RBI groundout scoring Nicole Horita.

Next up for Kenyon is an out-of-conference road to trip to nearby Capital University April 22 starting at 3:30.
