GAMBIER, Ohio – Junior
Paul Henshaw tied his season high with nine strikeouts as Kenyon College (20-12) defeated Wilmington College 11-3 Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference baseball game at McCloskey Field.
The right-handed pitcher retired nine straight batters from the second to fifth innings allowing the Kenyon offense to get going.
John Nahra put the Lords on the board in the first with a two-run single through the right side before the Fightin' Quakers tallied their first run in the second and cut the deficit to 2-1 after a run-scoring hit from Cole Voltz.
Kenyon moved ahead 4-1 in the bottom of the second when
Max Warren scored on a throwing error from Wilmington's first baseman. Two batters later, Matt Von Roemer hit a sacrifice fly to right field plating
Max Heldman.
Henshaw then retired the side in the third to bring the Kenyon bats back up.
In the bottom of the third,
Jono Chafe and Warren had back-to-back, run-scoring singles to push the Lords' lead to 6-1. The three-run inning was capped off as Von Roemer drew a bases-loaded walk.
Two more runs came for Kenyon in the fifth highlighted by
Jake Dunn's RBI double which moved the lead to 9-1.
Wilmington added two more runs in the sixth and ninth innings but Kenyon's offensive damage had been done already and the Fightin' Quakers never threatened.
Henshaw picked up his fifth win of the year while also inducing eight combined groundouts and flyouts. Offensively, Nahra led the Lords with three hits and three runs driven in while Von Roemer drove in two and scored a pair of runs. Warren and Dunn added two hits as well for Kenyon.
Next up for Kenyon is a trip to Allegheny College for an NCAC doubleheader April 25 starting at noon.
Paul Henshaw tossed six innings and allowed just one earned run as the Lords earned their 20th win of the year
defeating Wilmington 11-3. The junior righty struck out nine batters in the process.
