DELAWARE, Ohio – For the second straight season, the Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team was eliminated from the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament by Ohio Wesleyan University. Wednesday night, the nationally-ranked Battling Bishops handed Kenyon a 15-3 defeat and put an end to the Lords' 2015 campaign.
Ohio Wesleyan, which is ranked No. 3 nationally, entered the four-team NCAC bracket as the tournament's No. 1 seed. Kenyon was the No. 4 seed. One season ago, Ohio Wesleyan was the NCAC's No. 2 seeded-team and ousted Kenyon, the No. 3-seeded team, 13-4.
The loss finalizes Kenyon's overall 2015 record at 9-7. Ohio Wesleyan, which now carries a perfect 15-0 mark, moves on to play either Denison University or Wittenberg University in Saturday's NCAC Tournament final.
During the regular season, Kenyon played well against Ohio Wesleyan and maintained a lead into the fourth quarter before falling 10-7. From the start Wednesday, it looked as though the Lords might put another scare into the Battling Bishops. Within the game's first five minutes, Kenyon sophomore
Robert Jacobs drew first blood on an unassisted goal.
That 1-0 Kenyon lead only lasted a minute, however, as OWU retaliated with a Tommy Minkler goal off an assist from Kyle Foster. That opened the floodgates for the Battling Bishops, who rattled off eight more goals and built leads of 3-1 after one quarter and 9-1 at halftime. Minkler wound up scoring twice in the pivotal run, while teammate John Umbach added two goals and two assists.
When the teams returned to the field after the break, Kenyon again tossed in the first goal of the half. This time it was freshman
J.T. Meyer who pumped in his 20th goal of the season. Similar to the first half, Ohio Wesleyan responded with another barrage. This time the Battling Bishops strung together six consecutive goals to put the game well out of reach for the Lords.
Senior
Pat Kim tacked on Kenyon's final goal late in the fourth quarter off an assist from Jacobs, who finished the season with the team lead for goals (44) and points (56).
Umbach led all scorers Wednesday with three goals and three assists. Minkler, Foster, and Marcus Dietz each had two goals for Ohio Wesleyan.
Sophomore Robert Jacobs had a goal and an assist in the Lords' NCAC semifinal loss to Ohio Wesleyan.
Jacobs finished the season with the team lead in goals (44) and points (56).
