GAMBIER, Ohio – Freshman
Kat Englert continued to power the Ladies offense Wednesday at Mavec Field. She tallied five points on three goals and two assists to lead the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team to a 13-10 triumph over the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops.
Englert entered the game with 42 goals in her first nine collegiate games. Her average of 4.67 goals per game ranked tenth-best among all players in NCAA Division III. The reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week now has 45 goals on the season. She also has a ten assists and a team-high 55 points.
The Ladies, who never trailed in the contest, received additional offensive firepower from junior
Jane Symmes, who also chalked up a five-point game, and sophomore
Allie McLane. Symmes stuffed her stat line with a game-high four goals and one assist, 11 draw controls, eight ground balls and four caused turnovers. McLane notched three goals and one assist to go along with three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Despite playing catch-up the entire contest, Ohio Wesleyan, coached by former Kenyon assistant coach Chelsea Huguenard, never really faded out of the picture. After Kenyon scored the first three goals of the game, the Battling Bishops responded by closing the gap to 3-2 and later to 4-3.
Late in the first half, the Ladies put together a 5-1 run that created some separation. During the spurt, Englert scored twice. Symmes, McLane, and
Abby Coleman each scored once and ushered their Kenyon team into halftime with a 9-4 lead.
In the second half, the teams traded goals until
Kelley Russell and Symmes scored back-to-back to give the Ladies' their largest lead (13-7) of the game. At that point, there were only five minutes left and the final outcome seemed like a sure bet. Ohio Wesleyan, however, fired in three goals in the game's final 90 seconds to reach the double-digit mark and cut its six-point deficit down to three.
Patricia Ryan led OWU with three goals and Taylor Weis followed with two. Goalkeeper Jordan Bernstein, who made a dozen saves for the Bishops, saw a total of 33 Kenyon shots. At the other end of the field, Kenyon's
Meredith Bentsen got a look at 24 Ohio Wesleyan shots and recorded six saves.
The win put Kenyon's record at 7-3 overall and evened out the Ladies' conference mark at 2-2. The loss dropped Ohio Wesleyan to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the NCAC.
Junior Jane Symmes did a little of everything for the Ladies in their 13-10 Wednesday evening win against OWU.
She scored a game-high four goals, served up one assist, and piled up 11 draw controls, and eight ground balls.
