CINCINNATI, Ohio – Sarah Parker led Heidelberg University to a four-set victory over Kenyon College (3-3) Friday night in a non-conference volleyball match during the sixth annual Charlie Wrubiewski Tournament held at Mount St. Joseph University.
Parker tallied a match-high 19 kills with a .567 attack percentage to lead the Student Princes (5-1).
Heidelberg controlled the first set from the start as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead all on Ladies attack errors.
The Student Princes gained its biggest advantage (19-5) after a kill from Parker. She was near perfect in the opening set collecting six kills on just seven attempts (.857). Kenyon struggled in the first as they had a -.154 attack percentage and nine errors.
After falling behind 14-7 in the second set, the Ladies rallied to cut the deficit to three.
Schuyler Stupica started the rally with a kill and ace to bring the score to 14-9. The Student Princes then committed three straight errors to bring the tally to 15-12.
The rally was short lived though as Heidelberg followed with a 5-1 run to go back up seven (20-13) forcing a Kenyon timeout. The remainder of the set didn't bring another Kenyon comeback as the Student Princes prevailed 25-17.
In the third set, things were close early on with the score tied at 7 after a kill by
Tierney McClure. Kenyon then followed with a 9-3 run to take control.
Delaney Swanson's kill capped off the run and brought the score to 16-10.
Heidelberg cut it two within three (21-18) after a Ladies attack error but that was the closest they got the rest of the way. Kenyon won the third set, 25-18.
The fourth and final set was the best of the match. Neither team had a lead bigger than four points more than midway through. With the set tied at 15, Heidelberg followed with the match-clinching run as they reeled off six-of-the-next seven points and went ahead 21-16. They eventually prevailed 25-20.
Swanson led the Ladies with her fourth double-double of the year totaling 14 kills and 12 digs. Stupica added eight kills while
Lauren Kerr chipped in with six kills and six block assists.
Jensen Shurbert dished out 36 assists.
Kenyon will look to bounce back with two matches tomorrow against Mount St. Joseph (11:30 am) and Maryville College (2:30 pm).
