Ladies sweep Earlham, match win total from year ago

RICHMOND, Ind. – A straight-sets victory for the Kenyon College volleyball team over Earlham College Wednesday night signified just how much improvement the Ladies have made over the last year. After winning six matches a year ago, Kenyon and coach Amanda Krampf got their sixth win of the year in the early portion of their schedule this night.

The first set against the Quakers was tightly contested throughout as neither team held a lead bigger than two points.

Earlham's Denisha Mataia gave her team an 18-16 advantage before the Ladies went ahead 21-19 after an Alexi Donnelly ace. The opening set was knotted up again at 21 before Kenyon pulled away.

Back-to-back kills from Swanson pushed the score to 23-21 and the Ladies eventually prevailed 25-22.

Set two started in favor of Earlham as they attained a 5-2 lead following a Kenyon attack error. But the Ladies responded with an 8-0 run to take control. Five of those points came off errors from the Quakers.

More than halfway through the second set, the Ladies had doubled up the Quakers (18-6) after another error from the home team. The dominant second set saw Kenyon hit .370 as a team while Earlham hit just .037. Kenyon won 25-13.

Kenyon wrapped the match up with a 25-20 win in set three.

Kayla Morris' kill put Earlham up 7-6 early, but the Ladies responded with a 4-0 run to gain a lead it didn't relinquish. The closest the Quakers got the rest of the way was two points (10-8). After a Victoria Leggett ace, Kenyon was aided by another error which gave them its biggest lead of the set (21-13).

Swanson earned her seventh double-double of the season with a team-highs in kills (11) and digs (13).  Jensen Shurbert handed out 29 assists while Rachael Thorson added nine digs. Schuyler Stupica chipped in with seven kills and three blocks.

The Ladies are off the rest of the week. They'll return to action September 22 at Ohio Northern University.
