Ladies nip Fightin’ Engineers, claim fifth straight win

GAMBIER -- A goal in the second minute by Emma Klug was all the Kenyon College Ladies women's soccer team needed to get by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, 1-0, at Mavec Field on Saturday.

It was the fifth straight win for the Ladies, after dropping their first three of the season.

Klug scored after recovering a loose ball following a corner kick by teammate Maggie Smith. Klug scored on a kick to the right corner of the net. It was her second goal of the season.

Rain fell throughout the first half, and in the start of the second half. There was a 58-minute delay early in the second half due to thunder heard in the area.

When the teams returned, Kenyon's defense dominated. The Ladies allowed just one shot in the second half, a header by Samantha Jacobs in the 59th minute that sailed over the net. This, despite the Fightin' Engineers getting four corner kicks in the half.

The Ladies had nine shots on goal in the match. Smith led the way with four shots on goal. Campbell Fee had two. Tess Austin and Heather Pacheco each had one shot on goal.

Rose-Hulman  managed just one shot on goal in the entire match, when Samantha Jacobs took a shot off a corner kick in the 14th minute. Kenyon goalkeeper Alissa Poolpol snatched it for her only save of the day.

Kenyon outshot Rose-Hulman, 14-5. Ten of those shots by the Ladies came in the second half. Rose-Hulman had an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Ladies will look to make it six wins in a row when they host Otterbein University at Mavec Field on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The match is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
