GAMBIER, Ohio – With Wednesday's 2-0 triumph over the visiting Otterbein University Cardinals, the Kenyon College women's soccer team ran its win streak to six games, matching the longest streak produced by last season's 13-8-1 team.
The non-conference victory improved the Ladies' record to 6-3-0, while the Cardinals slid to 2-4-0. Kenyon now has just one non-conference game left on its schedule. The Ladies play host to North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wittenberg University on Saturday and then host a non-conference tilt with Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday. Following that, the Ladies close out the season with seven straight conference contests.
Wednesday's game was deadlocked until the 62nd minute. At that point, junior
Maggie Smith had the ball on the end line just to the right of the Cardinals' goal. She uncorked a crossing pass that landed near the center of the box. Several players scrambled for possession, but in the middle of it all, Kenyon freshman
Claudia Brown was able to poke the ball over the goal line for her fourth goal of the season.
About five minutes later, Smith took care of business. She collected a short pass from Brown, dribbled about two yards and launched a rocket into the Cardinals' net from roughly 25 yards out. That goal was Smith's team-leading sixth of the season.
Otterbein held a slim edge in shots, 12-10, but couldn't sneak any of them past Kenyon goalkeeper
Alissa Poolpol, who made four saves, notched her fifth shutout of the season and lowered her goals against average to 0.55.
The Ladies' 6-3-0 start to the season is their best since the 2011 squad broke out of the gates with a 9-2-0 record.
