GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies soccer team extended its win streak to seven consecutive games following Saturday's 3-1 home win over the Wittenberg University Tigers in what was the first North Coast Athletic Conference game of the season for both squads.
Kenyon, which dropped its first three games of the season, is now 7-3-0 and has the program's longest win streak since the 2011 team rattled off seven straight in the middle of its season. On the other side of the field, Wittenberg dropped to 4-4-0 overall.
The Ladies got the scoring started with an early penalty kick. After drawing a foul in the Tigers' box, Kenyon turned the ball over to freshman
Claudia Brown, who went straight up the middle with her penalty kick, giving Kenyon a 1-0 advantage in the game's 20th minute.
Shots were even (9-9) in the first half and Brown's goal stood through the half and longer. It wasn't until the 69th minute that another goal was scored. This one came off the foot of Wittenberg's Mackenzie Bolon, who tied up the game off an assist from Zoe Curry.
The score remained tied for exactly 61 seconds. Kenyon didn't waste much time in regaining the lead with a goal from junior
Maggie Smith. Freshman
Maia Emden sent in a pass that deflected off a Wittenberg defender and right to the feet of Smith, who promptly pounced on the ball and booted in her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Smith now has 23 career goals and is tied with Caddie Durrett '12 for seventh place all-time in the Kenyon books.
Sophomore
Gillian Blackwell didn't feel the one-goal lead was comfortable enough for the Ladies, so she increased the margin with her third goal of the season. She headed the ball into the Tigers' net off a fantastic feed from
Jane Symmes. The goal was Blackwell's third this year and the assist was Symmes' first.
The Ladies have two days rest ahead of them before they hit Mavec Field again. Tuesday they'll host Case Western Reserve University in their final non-conference contest of the season.
Sophomore Gillian Blackwell scored the final goal in the Ladies' 3-1 NCAC triumph over Wittenberg University.
The result extended the Ladies' win streak to seven games.
