Maggie Smith led the Ladies with three shots on goal against Case Western Reserve. But Kenyon
couldn't find the back of the net as they fell 2-0 on a rainy day at Mavec Field.GAMBIER, Ohio – On a rained-soaked Mavec Field, Case Western Reserve University (6-1-2) scored a pair of second-half goals to snap Kenyon College's seven-match winning streak Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer contest.
In the first half, both teams had ample opportunities to find the back of the net. Defender
Marie Laube got the Ladies' first good look of the match in the 12th minute. After a foul was called, Laube fired a free kick from about 30 yards that was no more than a foot away from going over the outstretched arms of the Spartans goalie.
Kenyon (7-4-0) had three more shots on goal in the first half but each attempt was saved by Case's Megan Romelfanger.
Makenzie Best and Marley Praprost each added on-goal attempts in the 19th and 38th minutes, respectively, but Ladies keeper
Alissa Poolpol denied them both.
The 0-0 scoreless tie went into halftime as the rain continued to intensify.
It didn't take long into the second half for Case Reserve to find all the scoring it needed in the match.
Just 30 seconds in, a cross from the right side came into the box and a deflection from Poolpol and a Spartans player but the ball in front of Elle Zadina who did the rest.
The Ladies tried to tie up around the 60th minute with shots from
Maggie Smith and
Jane Symmes but neither came through.
Case then added its second goal and pushed the match out of reach in the 73rd minutes. A through ball came to Best and she dribbled to just inside the 18-yard box and fired for the final tally.
Smith led Kenyon with three shots on goal while Symmes and Laube each fired a pair. Poolpol recorded six saves in the loss. Kenyon will look to get back in the win column on Oct. 3 when they host DePauw University in an NCAC match starting at 1 p.m.
