Ladies earn big NCAC win over DePauw

GAMBIER, Ohio – Abbey Roswell provided all the scoring Kenyon College (8-1, 5-0 NCAC) needed in a key early-season North Coast Athletic Conference matchup with DePauw University on Sunday at McBride Field.

Kenyon had been close to finding the back of the pipes throughout both halves, but finally broke through in the 60th minute as Roswell deflected a shot from Maddie Breschi for the lone score of the game.

Early in the first half, the Tigers (5-3, 4-1 NCAC) looked ready to gain some momentum. In the third minute, a penalty corner from Rose Revolinski resulted in a trio of shots for DePauw. Reilly Bruce fired twice while Grace Goodbarn added another, but all three were blocked by the Kenyon defense.

The Ladies had their opportunities as well later. In the eighth minute, Breschi and Minke Verweij each fired but neither attempt found that back of the pipes.

Both teams had a few more opportunities throughout the rest of the half but nothing came about.

In the second half, Kenyon's offense kept putting pressure on the Tigers' defense as they took 11 shots compared to just three for DePauw.

About nine minutes into the second half, the Ladies looked as if they would gain a 1-0 lead. After a penalty, Morgen Barroso lined up for a penalty shot but her liner was denied on a diving save by Tigers keeper Sarah Guendert.

That frustration didn't settle in though for the Ladies as 15 minutes later Roswell delivered.

DePauw had a chance with less than 30 seconds left to tie the game as a penalty corner from Revolinski came to Sofia Carretero, but the Ladies' defense rose to the occasion and forced a shot that went wide.

Next up for Kenyon is another big NCAC matchup on October 1 as they host Denison University at 5 p.m.
