HIRAM, Ohio – Scoring was at a premium again but the Kenyon College (12-6,6-3 NCAC) women's basketball team turned in another outstanding defensive performance on the road and defeated Hiram College 49-35 Saturday in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gym.
The 35-allowed points were the fewest given up by the Kenyon defense since the team allowed 27 in a road win at Oberlin seven years ago (Jan. 24, 2009). Additionally, the Ladies allowed the Terriers to hit just 12 shots, which was what Kenyon allowed in its previous game earlier in the week at Wittenberg.
Bailey Dominguez tallied a game-high 16 points including scoring 14 in the second half. Freshman
Lane Davis was stellar hitting all four of her shots for eight points while grabbing a game-high seven rebounds.
Sidney Cera also got in the mix with eight points, four rebounds and four assists. Rounding out Kenyon's top performers were
Ifeoma Archimalo who contributed seven points and
Hannah O'Day who registered five points and six rebounds.
The first quarter was one to forget as the two teams combined for just 12 points. Kenyon started the game 0-for-6 from the field before an O'Day three-ball about halfway through the quarter. The Ladies led 7-5 after the first stanza.
Second-quarter action saw the contest tied at 11 following a free throw from Hiram's Dana Perrotta at the 6:43 mark. But after that, the Ladies went on a 10-3 stretch and held the home team to 1-of-5 shooting. The run started with a
Jessica Gerber three-pointer and ended with a Davis layup with one second left.
The Ladies ballooned their 21-14 halftime lead to a 37-20 advantage at the end of the third quarter. Dominguez's jumper with 23 seconds left gave Kenyon its biggest lead of the game.
During the final quarter, Hiram opened with an 8-0 run which forced a Kenyon timeout. The Ladies weathered the storm however and got on the scoreboard with a Dominguez three-ball at the 4:02 mark which put Kenyon back up double-digits. The Terriers never made another run after that.
Kenyon is back in action January 27 when they host Oberlin for an NCAC game starting at 6 p.m.
Freshman Lane Davis came off the bench and scored eight points and grabbed a game-high seven
rebounds as the Ladies won their third game in a row at Hiram on Saturday.
