OBERLIN, Ohio – Trailing by as many as nine points early in the fourth quarter, the Kenyon College women's basketball team rallied for a 54-50 North Coast Athletic Conference win at Oberlin College on Wednesday night.
Throughout the final quarter of play, Kenyon held the host Yeowomen to just one field goal while piecing together a game-closing 16-3 run. The Ladies defense forced Oberlin into a 1-of-10 shooting performance and created five turnovers in that final quarter.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the court, junior
Sidney Cera started the Ladies' rally with a jumper at the 7:38 mark. Sophomore
Ifeoma Archimalo then sandwiched a three-pointer by
Bailey Dominguez with a pair of layups that pulled Kenyon within three points (50-47).
With a little more than two minutes to play, freshman
Lane Davis converted a layup. A minute later, Cera gave the Ladies the lead for good with another jumper. Dominguez, another junior, added a free throw with 22 seconds left and Archimalo tacked on two more freebies to cap the scoring with just three ticks on the clock.
Back in the first quarter, the Ladies built a 19-12 lead, but scored just six points in the second quarter to fall behind 27-25 at the half. Oberlin increased the lead in the third and advanced to the fourth quarter with a 44-38 lead.
The win improved Kenyon's overall record to 8-5 and its NCAC mark to 2-2. With roughly half the season still ahead of them, the Ladies already surpassed the win total from last's year 7-18 team. On the other hand, Oberlin has lost five of its last six games and watched its records slide to 6-7 overall and 0-4 in conference competition.
Individually, Archimalo set the tone for Kenyon with a career-high 16 points. She was 6-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-5 at the free throw line. She also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and polished off her stat line with three assists and two steals.
Cera contributed 11 points to go along with six assists, while Dominguez and
Miranda Diesz racked up seven points apiece.
The Ladies, winners of three of their last four games, will finally return home Saturday to battle the conference-leading DePauw University Tigers at 1 p.m. The Kenyon women have played just three home games this season with the last one being December 9.
Sophomore Ifeoma Archimalo scored six of her career-high 16 points in the fourth quarter Wednesday night
