GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College (9-5, 3-2 NCAC) defeated DePauw University for the first time since the Tigers began playing in the North Coast Athletic Conference during the 2011-12 season on Saturday at Tomsich Arena. The Ladies led from start to finish and prevailed by a 60-53 margin.
Kenyon had three players score in double-figures during the game.
Ifeoma Archimalo totaled 14 points and nine rebounds;
Miranda Diesz added 13 points while
Sidney Cera chipped in with 11. Leading the way off the bench was
Charlotte Bussema. The junior contributed eight points and four rebounds.
The Ladies' defense was superb during the day limiting the Tigers' offense to just 32.8 percent shooting, its second-lowest mark of the season.
First-quarter competition went entirely Kenyon's way as the Ladies didn't allow the Tigers to hit a single field goal (0-for-16) and had a 16-2 lead after the opening period. Seven different players scored for the Ladies in the opening stanza.
DePauw (10-5, 4-2 NCAC) finally found some offensive footing in the second period to cut into the double-digit deficit. The Tigers chipped away at the 14-point Kenyon lead and at the 3:25 mark, Maya Howard's layup brought the score to 18-15. The Ladies didn't relinquish their advantage though and took a 24-19 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter, both teams traded hoops, but Kenyon maintained its lead. DPU inched to within three on five different occasions, including at the 4:17 mark when Howard converted a layup (32-29). But as was the case during the game, the Ladies came right back as Diesz and Bussema hit jumpers on two of the next three possessions. Heading to the fourth, Kenyon led by four, 39-35.
The Ladies opened the final quarter hitting 4-of-7 from the field and took its first double-digit lead (48-37) of the game with 6:37 left when Archimalo hit a layup.
DePauw went down as many as 13 points (53-40) with just under four minutes left before nearly rallying. The Tigers went on a 9-0 run to cut the Kenyon lead to 53-49 after a Colleen Conners three-ball.
But after that, Kenyon converted 7-of-10 free throws to ice the game.
Next up for the Ladies is a quick trip to Denison University this coming Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
