GAMBIER, Ohio – Throughout her brilliant Kenyon College career, senior forward
Maggie Smith has been a reliable source of offense for the Ladies soccer team. Saturday, she came through again, scoring the game's only goal as Kenyon tripped up the DePauw University Tigers on their own turf.
The victory kept the Kenyon women atop the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) standings with a 2-0-0 mark. Overall, the Ladies are 4-5-1. The loss dropped DePauw to 1-1-0 within NCAC play and 5-4-1 overall.
Smith's goal came just 1:18 into the game. She launched a shot from about 30 yards out and it managed to find its way past Tigers' goalkeeper Riley Riordan, who ended up making three saves the rest of the way.
The goal was Smith's team- and conference-leading eighth of the season. She now has 33 career goals and 72 career points. Those totals both rank sixth-best in the 33-year history of the Kenyon program.
Defensively, the Ladies pitched their second-straight shutout and their third shutout of the season. Freshman goalkeeper
Jillian Countey made six saves in the win. It was her second shutout of the season and she lowered her goals against average to 1.29.
The Ladies have a week off before they put their unblemished conference record to the test again. They'll do so at home Saturday against The College of Wooster Fighting Scots.
Senior Maggie Smith notched her team-leading eighth goal of the season Saturday.
It was all the Ladies needed to defeat DePauw and run their NCAC record to 2-0-0.
