Ladies escape Oberlin with 3-2 win

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies trailed for the first time in nearly four years against Oberlin College on Sunday before Hannah Sklar's backhanded shot in the second overtime lifted Kenyon to a 3-2 comeback win against the fellow North Coast Athletic Conference school.

Despite putting a ton of pressure on Oberlin's defense, where the Ladies held a 32-9 shots advantage, another tough contest ensued during the afternoon.

The Ladies opened the first 21 minutes of action with eight shots, including four on goal. Nothing came through, however, and Oberlin capitalized a little later. At the 22:40 mark, the Yeowomen went up 1-0 as Amelia Huang found Ariana Enzerink off a penalty corner.

That 1-0 score remained for the rest of the half even though the Ladies got four more attempts on goal.

In the second stanza, it didn't take long for Kenyon to find its first score of the match. A little over two minutes in, Hannah Paterakis tallied her third goal of the year as her shot trickled in after a would-be save from Oberlin's goalie Maggie Gossiaux.

Both teams struck again, within 50 seconds of each other in fact, a little later in the second half.

Oberlin went up 2-1 when Maureen Coffey dribbled and fired into the far corner at the 51:48 mark. But right after that, Katelyn Hutchinson found junior teammate Weezie Foster along the left side and her shot rang true tying the match again.

The Yeowomen had three more on-goal looks the rest of the way but Ladies keeper Sarah Speroff stopped them sending the contest into overtime.

The first extra session saw both teams get a pair of looks around the pipes but nothing came through forcing a second overtime period.

In the second overtime, Oberlin didn't find any shots while Kenyon found three. The Ladies' third and final attempt of the period came as Sklar received a pass from Sarah Bauman and the freshman backhanded the shot home lifting Kenyon to victory.

Next up for the Ladies is a trip to Winchester, Virginia for a neutral site contest against Christopher Newport University on October 6.
