WINCHESTER, Va. –
Sam Grunder's first goal of the season lifted Kenyon College (8-4) to its second straight overtime win and in the process moved head coach
Jacque DeMarco to the front of the line in career wins on Thursday during a 1-0 win over Christopher Newport University.
The victory was DeMarco's 65th moving her past Sandra Moore who attained 64 victories from 1983-1991.
Once again, the Ladies' defense and goalie
Sarah Speroff stole the show. She notched her second-highest save total of the season (15) as CNU put a ton of pressure on Kenyon out-shooting them 21-7.
Within the first 12 minutes of the opening half, the Captains had taken multiple penalty corners and attempted five shots on goal. Speroff and company held strong though and kept the score at 0-0. After that early onslaught, CNU got just one more on-goal attempt.
On the flipside, junior
Weezie Foster had a pair of shots around the 15-minute mark for Kenyon but neither rang true.
In the second half, Christopher Newport turned up the heat on Kenyon and dominated possession by holding a 13-1 shots advantage.
Nearly exactly like the start of the game, the Captains opened the second stanza with a bunch of penalty corners and shots. Speroff notched four saves within the first four minutes while teammate
Shannon Hart recorded a defensive save after a shot by CNU's Rachel Cooke.
It didn't end there though as the Captains attempted four more shots on goal the rest of the half including one with about 30 seconds remaining. Mackenzie Neylon got that look but Speroff was there, her 15th save of the day, and pushed the game to overtime.
Just 81 seconds into the first extra session, Grunder got a pass along the near side from Foster and finished the attempt lifting the Ladies to another thrilling win.
Kenyon will look to continue its winning play when they host The College of Wooster for an NCAC game this Saturday, October 8 at noon.
Sam Grunder scored her first goal of the season as the Ladies earned a 1-0 overtime win against Christopher Newport.
The victory was also head coach Jacque DeMarco's 65th career win which
moved her to the top of the Kenyon record books.
