CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – For the second straight season and for the eighth time in program history, the Kenyon College men's soccer team earned the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular-season title. The Lords secured that accomplishment Saturday after registering a 1-0 triumph at Wabash College.
Along with the conference crown comes the right to host games throughout the NCAC's four-team postseason tournament. No. 13-ranked Kenyon (15-2-0, 8-1-0 NCAC) will take its first steps on that postseason path Wednesday at Mavec Field for a 2:30 p.m. game. While other conference games are still to be played tonight, it appears that the Lords' first-round opponent will be DePauw University (11-4-2, 6-3-0 NCAC), the only NCAC team to defeat Kenyon during the regular-season schedule.
The other tournament semifinal is shaping up to look like a battle between Wabash and Oberlin College. Regardless of the semifinal match-ups, the tournament final will be played next Saturday on the campus of the tournament's highest remaining seed.
Before they could even think about hosting the tournament, the Lords had to put away a tough Wabash (11-5-2, 6-2-1 NCAC) side in a defensive struggle.
Kenyon's game-deciding goal was registered at 69:02. After one failed attempt at a
Dalton Eudy to
Henry Myers connection, the two tried it again. Eudy gained control on the right side, a few yards outside of the Wabash box. He lofted a crossing pass to the far post, where it was met by Myers. Myers then out-dueled a defender and the Wabash goalkeeper to head the ball into the net for his fifth goal of the season. The assist was Eudy's fifth, as well.
Kenyon out-shot Wabash 14-5. Four of Kenyon's shots were on goal, while only one Wabash shot was on target. That result gave Kenyon goalkeeper
Sam Clougher one save for the game and his ninth shutout for the season.
The Lords' upcoming appearance in the postseason will be their fifth in a row and their ninth in the last ten seasons.
Henry Myers scored Saturday's lone goal at Wabash, giving Kenyon a 1-0 win and
a second-straight North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season title.
