Ladies fall twice to close regular season

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Kenyon College (16-11) fell in a pair of non-conference volleyball matches to Defiance College and Franklin College on Saturday afternoon. In both matches, the Ladies fell in straight sets.
 
Despite the outcomes, Kenyon got a couple more matches under its belt in preparation of the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Ladies, who are the third seed, will travel to face sixth seed Denison University on November 4 at 4 p.m. on the campus of Wittenberg University.
 
MATCH ONE
 
The Ladies fell by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-20 against the Yellow Jackets.
 
Kenyon saw Mackenzie Bruzzio tally five kills and four digs while fellow freshmen Maleah Miller and Haley Witschey each registered four kills. Sophomore Alexi Donnelly paced the Ladies defense with eight digs while third-year setter Jensen Shurbert totaled 14 assists.
 
Defiance was pretty good on the offensive end as they registered a .362 attack percentage while on the flip side; the Ladies produced just a .173 mark. Marissa Windau and Meredith Shank each had nine kills to lead the Yellow Jackets. Ari Mahaffey handed out a game-high 29 assists.
 
MATCH TWO
 
Franklin limited Kenyon, who was playing without Delaney Swanson, to another low offensive mark as they connected on just .132 of their attacks.
 
The Grizzlies won each set by 25-21 scores.
 
Bruzzio once again led the Ladies, this time with 11 kills. No other Kenyon player had any more than four. Shurbert nearly doubled her output of assists from the first match as she totaled 27 against Franklin. She also added nine digs while Donnelly chipped in with seven. Additionally, Peyton Thomas collected 13 digs which were a season high.  
 
Regardless of next week's results at the NCAC tourney, the Ladies are assured of their second straight winning campaign. The last time that was accomplished was the 1989 and 1990 seasons.

The Ladies closed their regular season with two losses against Defiance and Franklin. Kenyon will now prepare to take on Denison
in the first round of the NCAC Tournament which is set to begin on November 4 at Wittenberg University.
