GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon Lords (9-2-0, 2-1 NCAC) soccer team bounced back with a convincing 5-1 win over The College Of Wooster Fighting Scots on Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference soccer match at Mavec Field. It was the ninth straight win in the series for Kenyon.
Heading into Saturday's match, the Lords had struggled in the previous two contests putting shots into the back of the net. On this day though, scoring was aplenty.
Kenyon got the first lead of the match in the 19th minute. A cross from the right sideline was deflected by Wooster goalie Scot Stacho and the loose ball came to senior
Tony Amolo who finished into the top-right corner.
The Fighting Scots responded not even two minutes later though in near identical fashion. A cross from the left end line got deflected by Lords' goalie
Sam Clougher and Aleksi Pelkonen finished tying the match.
Despite giving up the lead, Kenyon's defense held true the rest of the way as Wooster only got one more attempt in front of the net.
With the score tied at 1, the Lords took over. At the 36:35 mark, another bobbled ball by Wooster's keeper resulted in a scrum and sophomore
Will Bennett finished the opportunity pushing Kenyon up 2-1.
Then just 30 seconds later, Stacho attempted to clear a ball from the right corner of the 18-yard box but his kick went off the foot of
Brice Koval and back into the net sending the Kenyon faithful into a frenzy.
Koval later added a penalty kick goal to push Kenyon's lead to 4-1.
In the second half, the Lords tallied one more score. After a Wooster foul,
Dalton Eudy sent a free kick from around midfield into the box and
Henry Myers headed it near
Bret Lowry who finished with a header of his own to bring the tally to 5-1. For Lowry, it was his first collegiate goal.
Kenyon out-shot Wooster by a whopping 32-6 margin and held a 9-2 corner kicks advantage.
Next up for the Lords is a date with current NCAC first-place team Oberlin College. That match is October 11 on the road at 5:00 p.m.
Defender Bret Lowry scored his first collegiate goal and added an assist as Kenyon defeated The College of Wooster 5-1
on Saturday. The win sets up a big matchup on October 11 at Oberlin who currently leads the NCAC.
