SALISBURY, Md. – The Kenyon Ladies field hockey team gave No.2-ranked Salisbury University all it could handle on Saturday morning but the Sea Gulls came away with a 3-0 win in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Kenyon closed 2016 with 15-7 record, winners of the North Coast Athletic Conference and got its furthest in the NCAA Tournament since 2006.
First-half action saw both teams get some on-target action.
Salisbury took the first two looks from Abbey Shobe and Annah Brittingham in the 7th and 9th minutes, respectively, but both attempts were saved by
Sarah Speroff.
At the 10-minute mark, Kenyon's
Shannon Hart gave the Ladies an opportunity but her shot was denied by Sea Gulls goalie Tressie Windsor.
The scoreless tie was finally broken at 24:18. A shot from Salisbury was rebounded to Kristen Yingling who then passed to Shobe who finished the attempt. It was her 16th goal of the season.
That 1-0 score remained the same until nine minutes into the second half. Following a penalty corner, Arielle Johnston passed to Casie Preisch along the right wing and she fired into the cage doubling Salisbury's lead.
Down by two, Kenyon got three looks in the 58th minute, but two
Katelyn Hutchinson shots were blocked and
Sam Grunder's attempt went wide.
The Ladies found just one more shot the rest of the way while the Sea Gulls tallied another goal with five minutes left.
Salisbury out-shot Kenyon 16-9 and held an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners. In goal, Speroff came up with nine saves.
Coach
Jacque DeMarco's team will be loaded once again next season with every starter returning.
