LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Kenyon Lords (18-2) had three players come off the team's deep and talented bench and score all three goals in a 3-0 defeat of Maryville College (TN) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Lynchburg College's Shellenberger Field.
Kenyon also spurned the nation's second-best offense – which had 79 goals heading into the match – to only a few good looks as keeper
Sam Clougher came up with five saves.
The Lords had some good offensive movement within the first 15 minutes of action but nothing came through. That all changed though with 1:53 remaining on the first half clock.
Freshman forward
Philippe Stengel was outside the 18-yard box and he fired a rocket to the right side breaking the scoreless tie. It was his fourth goal in the last six matches.
In the second half, Maryville's leading scorer Caleb Lucas got his first on-target look eight minutes into the stanza but Clougher came up with his second save.
Seven minutes later, the Lords struck again.
Brice Koval, the team's leading scorer, was inside the right part of the 18-yard box and he shot into the left side doubling Kenyon's lead.
The Scots got just two more good looks the rest of the way which were again saved by Clougher.
Kenyon's final goal came from the foot of sophomore
David Anderson. After
John Penas's attempt was saved, Anderson was there to clean it up.
Next up for Kenyon is Lynchburg. The Hornets, winners of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, defeated John Carroll University 4-2 in the first round.
Philippe Stengel's goal late in the first half provided all the scoring Kenyon needed to defeat Maryville in the first round
of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Lords will play Lynchburg College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
