Balanced attack leads Ladies past Muskingum

GAMBIER, Ohio – Griffin Tullis helped the Kenyon Ladies basketball team to a 68-57 season-opening win over Muskingum University on Tuesday night at Tomisch Arena. It was Kenyon's sixth victory in its last seven contests against the Fighting Muskies.

Tullis gave Muskingum problems all night as she registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five steals. Bailey Dominguez scored a team-high 14 points and added four assists and two steals. Kenyon also saw Miranda Diesz and Jessica Gerber score 10 apiece while Charlotte Bussema came off the bench and recorded eight points and six rebounds.

The Ladies got their season off to a good start in the first quarter. With the score tied at 5, Dominguez, Bussema and Diesz each scored for a 6-0 run. By the end of the quarter, they held a 15-11 lead. Kenyon shot over 42% in the opening stanza.

Second-quarter action though went in favor of the visitors.

A 10-0 run to start the second gave the Fighting Muskies its first lead as the stretch was capped off by a three-pointer from Olivia Besancon. The Ladies scraped back to retake the lead at the 4:27 mark when Gerber found Tullis in the lane for a layup. Another run by MU capped off by a Stephanie Clark layup put the visitors up again, this time 29-27, and they held that lead before heading to the locker room with a 31-29 advantage.

In the third, the Ladies used a trio of three-pointers to take control for good.

At the 7:12 mark, Tullis drained a three and three possessions later, freshman Paige Matijasich hit another one pushing the Ladies ahead 44-38. Two sequences later, Gerber hit another shot from range in the left corner which increased the Kenyon lead to 47-38.

Kenyon held a 43-38 advantage after three quarters, and in the fourth, some good defense closed the door as the Ladies held the visitors to nine points.

Bussema's layup with about six minutes remaining pushed the Kenyon lead to its biggest (60-48) and following that, the closest Muskingum got was three points (60-57) at 1:41 when Mallory Taylor hit two free throws. Diesz followed with four straight points and Sidney Cera added four free throws for the final tally.

Next up for the Ladies is a trip to the Anderson University Tip-Off in Indiana. Kenyon will play Marietta College on November 18 at 8 p.m.
