Ladies struggle against Marietta at Anderson Tip-Off

ANDERSON, Ind. – Marietta College had no trouble getting by the Kenyon College women's basketball team on Friday night as the Pioneers earned a 56-46 victory during Anderson University's Tip-Off. The Ladies struggled mightily on the offensive end as they shot just 23.3% (14-of-60) including a 1-for-18 (5.6%) clip beyond the three-point line.

Miranda Diesz was the only Kenyon player to score in double figures as she registered 10 points. Ifeoma Archimalo added nine points and nine rebounds while Charlotte Bussema tallied seven points and five rebounds.

The Ladies got out to a 7-5 lead about three minutes into the game after Diesz hit a three-pointer on an assist from Sidney Cera.

Later in the quarter, back-to-back buckets from Bussema and Sharon Hull put Kenyon back up 13-10 with under four minutes left in the period. After that though, the Pioneers began to get in gear.

With the score tied 15-15 following Jessica Gerber's lone field goal, Marietta closed the quarter on a 10-2 run capped off by Ashley Barker's three-ball with one second remaining in the quarter.

Things got worse for Kenyon in the second.

Diesz got the first point of the quarter on a free throw cutting the deficit to 25-18. But the Ladies followed offensively with a 1-of-13 shooting performance including turning the ball over six times. On the other side, two free throws from Nikki Macke put the Pioneers up their biggest margin (33-18) and they would take a 15-point lead into the break, 37-22.

The Ladies couldn't crack the double-digit deficit in the third, but in the fourth two free throws from senior Bailey Dominguez pulled the tally to 53-46. That's the closest Kenyon got the rest of the way.

Kenyon actually outscored Marietta in the second half (24-19), but its offense couldn't find the spark to make things interesting.

Next up for the Ladies is a contest against Illinois Tech tomorrow at 2 p.m.
