GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Lords basketball team utilized career-highs from juniors
Phillip Crampton and
Alexander Powell to notch its first win of the season. Crampton tossed in a game-high 25 points and Powell pitched in with 22 as the Lords toppled the Earlham College Quakers, 83-63, Tuesday night at Tomsich Arena.
The game was the Lords' first at home this season and they led from wire-to-wire. They shot season-bests from the field (24-of-43, 55.8 percent) and from the free throw line (30-of-37, 81.1 percent). The Lords also posted a healthy 39-27 advantage in the rebounding department.
Crampton ended up going 9-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the line. His 25-point output more than doubled his previous single-game best of 12 points scored against Allegheny College during his freshman season. In addition to his scoring, Crampton had three rebounds.
Powell tied his career best, which he previously set last season against DePauw University. Tuesday, the 6-3 guard went 6-of-9 overall, 3-of-4 from three-point range and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. Like Crampton, he also grabbed three rebounds.
Senior swingman
Ethan Shapiro led the Lords on the glass, as he latched on to ten boards and also scored six points. Junior forward
Will Sigl added seven rebounds and ten points. His seven rebounds were a career best and his ten points tied his career best.
The Lords (1-3) jumped out to early leads of 7-2 and 13-5 thanks in part to Crampton, who set the tone by scoring eight of Kenyon's first 13 points. Earlham never got closer than seven points in the first half and Kenyon's lead ballooned to as many as 16 points before settling on a 40-31 halftime lead.
In the second half, Earlham (1-2) trimmed its lead to eight points, but Kenyon put the game away by going on a 9-3 run that covered just about four-and-a-half minutes. During the spurt, the Lords went 7-of-8 at the free throw line.
While Kenyon was knocking down its free throws, Earlham struggled at the line, shooting 60.7 percent (17-of-28). The Quakers didn't fare much better in other areas either, as they shot 36.8 percent overall (21-of-57) and just 20.0 percent (4-of-20) from behind the arc.
Darrell Hutchison and Kenneth Stalling were the only two Quakers to reach double-digit scoring marks. They both registered 14 points.
The Lords now look at a long break before getting back to competition on December 3, when they head to Granville, Ohio to start conference play against Denison University.
Junior Phillip Crampton poured in a career-high 25 points Tuesday while leading
the Lords basketball team to an 83-63 home-opening win over Earlham College.
