Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Ladies come through in overtime versus Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Overtime contests have become the recent norm for the Kenyon College field hockey team and Wednesday's matchup at Elizabethtown College turned out to be no different. Junior Kelsey Trulik scored the game-winner and the Ladies won 2-1 and advanced out of the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time since 2006.

Kenyon struggled to get opportunities near the Elizabethtown cage as they were held shot-less in the first half before finding rhythm near the end of the second half and then in overtime.

The Blue Jays broke a scoreless tie with 1:41 left in the first half when Nicole Leaf passed from the right end line to teammate Kelsey Detweiler who was right in front of the cage.

Like the previous two games for Kenyon where they trailed against Denison University and DePauw University, they fought back to tie the game.

In the 59th minute, a penalty corner ended up near the stick of Hannah Sklar who got the ball near Shannon Hart and the junior's shot rang true tying the game at 1-1.

The Ladies got two more shots after that but both were blocked.

During the overtime session, Elizabethtown had a grand opportunity within two minutes of the extra session. A one-on-one breakaway from a Blue Jays got a player near the box, but Sarah Speroff sprang into action and didn't allow Elizabethtown to get a shot off.

Not too longer later, Katelyn Hutchinson found Trulik for the game-winner after a penalty corner and the Ladies stormed the field.

Next up for Kenyon is a trip to Salisbury University on November 12. This will be the second all-time meeting between the schools with Salisbury winning the previous matchup in 2009 by a 7-0 score.
