Cera leads sharp-shooting Ladies to win

DELAWARE, Ohio – Senior point guard Sidney Cera scored 16 points, one shy of her career-high, and dished out a game-high five assists Saturday while steering the Kenyon College Ladies to a 70-54 North Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball victory over the host Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops.

Kenyon (7-3, 3-1 NCAC), which last played a game nearly two weeks ago, showed a few signs of rust in the early going. The Ladies missed four of their first five shots, but a three-pointer from Bailey Dominguez at the 6:28 mark gave Kenyon a 5-4 lead and kick-started the offense.

Griffin Tullis followed with a layup and Cera canned another Kenyon three-pointer to push the Ladies ahead 10-4. Jessica Gerber later added another long ball for the Ladies, who wrapped up the first quarter with a 13-6 lead.

That lead just kept expanding in the second quarter, as the Ladies outscored the Battling Bishops 21-11 in the period. Back-to-back layups from Lane Davis and Tullis opened the Kenyon lead to 13. Later, a three-pointer and a pair of free throws from Gerber gave the Kenyon women a 30-17 advantage. Davis and Cera then drained back-to-back buckets and the Ladies took a 34-17 lead into the break.

Ohio Wesleyan (3-6, 1-2 NCAC) struggled to find open shots against Kenyon. The Battling Bishops were just 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) in the first half, including a 1-of-13 showing (7.7 percent) from the perimeter. Capitalizing on the missed shots, Kenyon outrebounded the Battling Bishops, 28-14, in the first half and 45-28 for the game.

In the third quarter, another three-pointer from Gerber gave Kenyon its largest lead (50-25) with 3:20 showing on the clock. During the last 20 minutes of play, Ohio Wesleyan never got closer than 15 points.

Cera ended up scoring nine of her 16 points in the second half. She played a total of 23 minutes in the game and shot 7-of-11. She was 2-of-5 from three-point range and also grabbed three rebounds. Gerber was 3-of-4 from long range and finished with 11 points, while Dominguez chipped in with ten more points for Kenyon. Davis led the Ladies on the glass by grabbing a game-high eight rebounds. Nine of the 11 Kenyon players who logged minutes had three rebounds or more.

As a team, the Ladies shot 30-of-66 (45.5 percent) and 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from long range.

Ohio Wesleyan got 13 points apiece from Megan Kuether and Trischa Lacy and wound up shooting 18-of-50 (36.0 percent) overall and 3-of-20 (15.0 percent) from beyond the arc.
