GAMBIER, Ohio – Deontay Scott's two free throws with about a minute left helped the visiting Westminster College (PA) Titans earn a 74-73 win against Kenyon College on Thursday night in a non-conference basketball game at Tomsich Arena.
The loss dropped Kenyon to 2-8 while Westminster improved to 7-4.
Leading the way for Kenyon was freshman
Ben Stern. He dropped 18 points, a season-high, while hitting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Matt Shifrin was solid on the evening as he was 5-of-8 from the field, tallied 15 points, a game-high four assists and collected two steals. Junior
Alexander Powell added nine points while fourth-year
Ethan Shapiro came up with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Things did not start off great for the Lords as the Titans scored the game's first 10 points following a Jarret Vrabel layup at the 17:42 mark.
Kenyon responded with an 11-2 spurt right after though and got the score to 12-11 highlighted by a pair of three-balls from Stern. Westminster added one more stretch, a 6-0 run, before the Lords battled back once more.
Down 18-11, the Lords clawed back and got a lead they would hold the rest of the half as Shifrin buried a long ball with 9:43 left. That gave Kenyon a 22-21 advantage. The Lords saw that lead increase to as many as 11 points when Shapiro added another three pointer with five minutes remaining giving the home team a 36-25 lead.
The Lords were up 40-36 at the break and saw nearly half (7-15) of their three-point shots drop.
In the second half, competition was extremely close. Over the next 20 minutes, there were six ties and eight lead changes and neither team had a lead bigger than five points.
With 2:14 left, Stern sank a free throw which put Kenyon up 73-68. On the ensuing possession, Scott hit another foul shot cutting the deficit to four (73-69). Following a Lords turnover on the next possession, a three-point shot from Cameron Kane-Johnson pulled the Titans to within one.
The Lords missed a contested layup on their next trip and then the Titans took the lead for good with two free throws from Scott.
Kenyon had one last chance at the game-winner with 1.7 seconds left, but a long pass to
Phillip Crampton and shot from just inside the three-point line didn't fall and Westminster held on.
Next up for the Lords is a trip to the state of Texas where they'll play Southwestern University on January 2 and Trinity College the next day.
Freshman Ben Stern scored a season-high 18 points but the Lords lost a close one on Thursday as Westminster scored
the game's last six points and held on for a 74-73 victory at Tomsich Arena.
