GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies basketball team was down four points heading to the second, but a 24-10 run sparked the team to a 90-54 victory over Allegheny College on Wednesday night in North Coast Athletic Conference play.
Junior
Griffin Tullis led all scorers with a career-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The Ladies (6-2, 2-1 NCAC) also got season-high scoring efforts from
Jessica Gerber (14) and
Charlotte Bussema (13). Additionally, Gerber dished out a game-high seven assists. Rounding out Kenyon's top scorers were
Lane Davis and
Ifeoma Archimalo who tallied 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Kenyon dominated the paint outscoring Allegheny 48-14 and the Ladies' bench was superb as they had a 51-25 advantage.
First-quarter action was extremely close as neither team held a lead bigger than three points. In the final minute, Bussema registered a free throw before Maia Joiner drained a three-pointer with 44 seconds left to give the visitors an 18-14 lead.
With a four-point deficit to start the second, the Ladies turned to the three-point shot to retake the lead.
Tullis opened the quarter with a long ball from the left corner to pull the score to one (18-15). Following a Davis layup, Tullis found another three a couple possessions later to give Kenyon the lead, 22-18.
Kenyon never gave up the lead after that and turned to their nationally-ranked defense and plethora of offensive weapons to begin pulling away. With a 29-25 lead, a 9-3 run to close the second including six points for Bussema put the home tea m up 38-28.
In the third, Allegheny hit four of its first seven shots before the Ladies shut them down and expanded their lead. Leading 42-35 with 7:11 left, Kenyon hit a 19-2 run, allowed the Gators to score just one field goal and went into the fourth with a 61-37 advantage. Gerber led Kenyon with six points during the stretch.
Nothing changed in the fourth as Kenyon hit 12-of-17 from the field and outscored Allegheny 29-17.
Next up for Kenyon is a non-conference date with Case Western Reserve University (6-2) on Friday at 7 p.m. inside Tomsich Arena.
