Brien Comey saved their best for last, setting career-highs on Senior Day for the Kenyon College men's basketball team as the Lords defeated the Wabash College Little Giants by a count of 82-76 Saturday afternoon at Tomsich Arena.
Connolly scored a career-high 33 points on 11-for-18 shooting to cap off the regular-season schedule with 489 points. He also became the 26th man in Kenyon basketball history to eclipse the 1,000-point milestone, as his career total now sits at 1,002.
Meanwhile, Comey set a College single-game record with nine blocks in addition to eight points, eight rebounds, and one rim-shaking dunk. The previous Kenyon record of eight blocked shots was shared by Allen Bediako '09 and Ray Davis '94.
The game was close throughout with no team holding a lead of more than six points at any point. Kenyon (11-14, 9-10 NCAC) put the game away by going 10-for-12 from the free throw line over the final 1:40. Overall, the Lords went 29-for-36 from the charity stripe, outscoring the Little Giants by 17 at the line.
Daniel Purvlicis scored 13 points in each half for Wabash (13-12, 7-11 NCAC), finishing with a strong 26-point and eight-rebound effort. Both Connolly and Purvlicis entered the contest as top-5 scorers in the NCAC. Connolly's scoring average now sits at 19.9 ppg, while Purvlicis is at 18.1 ppg.
The Kenyon win, combined with Oberlin College's loss to The College of Wooster makes Kenyon the No. 6 seed in next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Lords' first-round game will be Tuesday night at Hiram College.
The Lords' appearance in the NCAC Tournament will be their 12th in the last 13 seasons.
Senior Brien Comey had eight points, eight rebounds and a Kenyon single-game record nine blocks
