FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Kenyon Ladies softball team rolled by Edgewood College 13-2 Saturday afternoon before being shut down against Augsburg College by an 11-3 count at CenturyLink Sports Complex during the Gene Cusic Classic.
GAME ONE
Kenyon spotted Edgewood a 1-0 lead to start the game before showing its offensive prowess the rest of the way. By game's end, the Ladies had invoked the run rule, winning 13-2.
In the home half of inning one, Kenyon sent seven batters to the plate and tallied all the runs they needed for victory in the contest.
Madi Maldonado scored first as she stole home. Later in the frame,
Amanda Ogata doubled to right center plating
Grace Pilz. Kenyon's final run of the inning came as Ogata scored from third as the Eagles tried to record an out along the infield.
The Eagles' bats were cold during the game as Kenyon pitchers
Austen Whibley and
Elizabeth Ovieda combined to allow just four hits.
A six-run third inning really blew open the game for the Ladies. Whibley drew a bases-loaded walk for Kenyon's fourth run of the affair while
Amanda Coyle,
Lindsey Susolik and Pilz each recorded run-scoring hits. By the end of the inning Kenyon was up 10-1.
Maldonado and
Jane Ghublikian helped provide the final scoring for Kenyon in the fourth. Maldonado cranked out an RBI single while Ghublikian smashed a two-run double to right center.
GAME TWO
The Ladies jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the game as Ogata connected with an RBI single and
Britny Patterson scored from third after a bases-loaded walk was issued.
But a missed opportunity along the infield in the bottom of the frame proved costly as Augsburg tallied seven runs.
Brianna Cline got the Auggies on the board with an RBI double bringing the score to 2-1. Two batters later, Anna Podewils added a fielder's choice RBI which tied the game at 2.
The next at-bat swung the momentum in favor of Augsburg. Ashley Anfinson popped up nearing left field, but an attempt from Maldonado at shortstop to record the final out didn't come through as the ball sailed over her outstretched glove. Following that play, the Auggies recorded four straight run-scoring hits capped off by a two-run double which brought the score to 7-2.
Kenyon never responded after that as they got just one base-runner in scoring position between the second and fourth innings. The final run of the game for Kenyon came as Ghublikian smoked a shot to left field. She totaled three of Kenyon's five hits during the game. Offensively, the Ladies' hit total was the second-fewest all season.
Next up for the Ladies are two games tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. against Suffolk University and Salem State University in Naples.
The Ladies softball team downed Edgewood 13-2 before dropping an 11-3 contest to Augsburg on Saturday.
Jane Ghublikian did her part going 4-for-7 with a double, home run and three RBI.
