Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Englert scores seven in Ladies’ home-opening win

GAMBIER, Ohio – Sophomore Kat Englert whipped up seven goals and three assists Saturday to lead the Kenyon College Ladies lacrosse team to a 14-7 home-opening victory over the Otterbein University Cardinals. The win improved Kenyon's record to 3-0, marking the third-straight season Ladies started a season with a perfect record through three games.

Englert, last year's leading scorer with 64 goals and 78 points, didn't waste any time in taking it to the Cardinals. She scored five of Kenyon's first seven goals, powering the Ladies to a 7-2 lead with roughly six minutes left in the first half.

Cassie Hudson-Heck, Kelley Russell and Mary Grace Detmer scored the Ladies' other first-half goals, as the Kenyon women rolled to intermission with a 9-3 lead.

Saturday's emergence of Englert looks to give Kenyon three potent scoring threats moving forward. Through three games, Englert leads the team with 13 goals and 18 points. Jane Symmes, a senior who had a goal and two assists against Otterbein, ranks second on the team with 11 goals and 17 points. Hudson-Heck, a freshman, scored twice against the Cardinals and now has season totals of 10 goals and 13 points.

Symmes and Hudson-Heck scored in the second half, as did junior Allie McLane. Englert also tacked on two more to give Kenyon a nice 14-4 cushion before Otterbein scored the final three goals of the game during the course of the last 14 minutes of play.

Kenyon outshot Otterbein 33-16 and posted a 14-9 advantage in draw controls. Englert led the Ladies with 12 shots, while Symmes notched a team-best eight draw controls. Symmes and Russell, another senior, also tied for the team lead with five groundballs apiece, helping Kenyon take a 22-17 advantage in that department.

Sophomore Allie Dumas once again got the start in goal and chalked up four saves to earn the win. She made way for freshman Carina Barnes to play the last ten minutes of the game. In that time, Barnes allowed two goals and made two saves.

After playing three games in three states over the last five days, the Ladies get a little bit of a break before heading to Ohio Northern University for their next game. That non-conference contest is slated for Tuesday with a 5 p.m. start.
