NAPLES, Fla. – Kenyon College wrapped up its final day competing in the Gene Cusic Classic on Wednesday by playing Nichols College and University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Ladies (9-7) fell 6-5 against Nichols before trouncing the Yellowjackets 12-1 in five innings.
GAME ONE
Nichols pitcher Haley Fountain snagged a
Nicole Horita line drive with Kenyon threatening in the bottom of the seventh to preserve a 6-5 victory for the Bison in game one.
Leading up to the seventh frame, competition from both teams had been plenty.
The Bison gained the first lead of the game as Christina Barrows socked a two-run double in the second inning. Kenyon came back in the home half of the same inning to tie the contest as sophomore
Madi Maldonado added a double of her own plating Horita and
Mari Colucci.
Each team added a run in the third and fourth innings which brought the tally to 4-4.
In the fifth, Nichols took the lead for good. An RBI groundout Courtney Manarky scored the Bison's fifth run and two batters later, Barrows was hit-by-pitch scoring Kasey Ayer.
Down by two, Maldonado pulled Kenyon to within one (6-5) after she hit her second two-bagger of the day allowing
Amanda Coyle to score.
Then in the seventh,
Lindsey Susolik and
Elizabeth Ovieda each recorded singles. They were able to reach the corners with two outs before Fountain came up with game-saving out.
Coyle, Maldonado and Colucci led the Ladies with two hits apiece.
GAME TWO
The Ladies recorded 13 hits and rolled by Wisconsin-Superior in the tune of a 12-1 win. Leading the way for Kenyon were seniors
Molly O'Connor and Susolik. O'Connor was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in while Susolik went 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Wisconsin-Superior scored the first run of the game as an RBI groundout allowed Kari Shipman to score. After that though, the Yellowjackets never sniffed another run the rest of the game.
Down by one, Kenyon turned in a six-run second frame to seize control. O'Connor started the scoring belting a home run to centerfield. Four batters later, Maldonado connected with a run-scoring single to move the Ladies ahead 2-1.
Jane Ghublikian came up next and tallied a run-scoring double. Over the rest of the frame, Kenyon added three more hits that drove in a trio of base-runners.
Following Kenyon's massive outburst, the Yellowjackets never managed to get back in the game. In fact, they only recorded one hit as the Ladies continued to add run support.
Susolik added a two-run homer to highlight fourth frame and added an RBI double in the fifth.
