Bogacz delivers career high as Lords down Quakers

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Sophomore Jesse Bogacz struck out a career-high 11 batters on Thursday as the Kenyon College baseball team earned a 5-2 win over Earlham College.

Bogacz's previous best came last season when the Bayside, New York native struck out eight on three separate occasions.

Competition was close within the first three innings of Thursday morning's affair.

Kenyon got off to a good start courtesy of Alec Manning. After three straight singles from Mikey Arman, Phillip Nam and John Nahra, Manning followed with a two-run single to give the Lords a 2-0 lead. In the home half of the first, Earlham's Brenna Laird tripled and in the next at-bat, Thomas Rea drove him in.

After a scoreless second frame, each team added a single run in the third. Nahra tallied an RBI single for Kenyon while Nate Lynch came up with a single plating a Quaker base-runner.

With Kenyon nursing a 3-2 lead, Bogacz turned on another gear. From the fourth inning to the end, he allowed just three hits, struck out six and retired the side in two of those innings. Additionally, just two Quaker runners got into scoring position.

After the Lords turned a ground ball into a double play to end the eighth, the offense carried that momentum over into the ninth.

Ross Scheinberg started the inning with a single and stolen base. In the next plate appearance, Mike Wakin entered as a pinch hitter and drove Scheinberg home. The scoring was capped off by Arman's RBI double two batters later.

Arman, Nahra and Scheinberg each recorded multiple hits to lead the Kenyon offense. Defensively, Bogacz also got help from his surrounding cast as they collected seven flyouts and groundouts.

Kenyon closes its spring break trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Norwich University starting at 10 a.m. in Vero Beach.
