UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team captured its fifth straight win to open the season, defeating the John Carroll University Blue Streaks, 13-11, on Saturday at Don Shula Stadium. Kenyon trailed by as many as four goals in the first half, but scored nine of the game's last 11 goals to earn the win.
The back-and-fourth contest saw four lead changes and four ties. It was all Kenyon early, responding to John Carroll's opening goal with four of their own and taking a 4-1 lead. That lead did not last long, though. The Blue Streaks went on to score seven unanswered goals and gained an 8-4 edge with 7:45 to play in the first half.
Kenyon was able to score the next four goals and the teams entered halftime with the score tied at eight.
In the third quarter, John Carroll moved ahead 10-9, but Kenyon cashed in a four-goal run to take a 13-10 lead with 17:23 to go. The Ladies defense then took over the rest of the way, yielding just one more Blue Streaks goal before time expired.
Sophomore
Kat Englert paced the Kenyon offense with one assist and five goals, including the game-winner. Freshman
Cassie Hudson-Heck recorded a hat trick, while
Allie McLane and
Mary Grace Detmer each scored twice.
Jane Symmes had one goal and led the team with four draw controls. Sophomore
Allie Dumas had five saves in her fifth victory between the pipes.
Despite John Caroll winning the draw control battle, 16-10, Kenyon was still able to outshoot the Blue Streaks, 26-18. The Blue Streaks were only able to register seven shots in the second half and did not record a single shot in the game's final 5:13.
The Ladies will now take their perfect season on the road Wednesday, as they head to Bexley, Ohio to face unbeaten Capital University. The opening draw for that non-conference contest is scheduled for 7 p.m.
