GAMBIER, Ohio – With just 29 seconds left in Saturday's women's lacrosse game at Mavec Field, the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers fired home the game-winning goal and handed the host Kenyon College Ladies their first loss of the season.
Kenyon (6-1, 0-1 NCAC) tied the score at 12-12 on a goal from
Kat Englert with 3:09 to play. Wittenberg then won the ensuing draw control and fired off a shot that was saved by Kenyon keeper
Allie Dumas with 2:32 showing on the clock. Kenyon failed to clear the ball and Wittenberg went back to work in the Kenyon zone.
At the 2:10 mark, the Tigers unleashed another shot, but it was off target. Reclaiming possession off the miss, Wittenberg burned clock until Olivia Lash slashed through the arc and put the game-winner into the Kenyon cage.
Wittenberg (6-1, 1-0 NCAC) again won the following draw control and held on for the win. Overall, the Tigers won 15 of the 26 draws contested. Ten of those wins went to Emily Wadds. For Kenyon, senior
Jane Symmes tallied six draw controls. That gave her 38 on the season and 238 for her career. That total is just one shy of tying the Kenyon career mark of 239 draw controls set by Ali Lacavaro '99.
Symmes, who missed quite a bit of the first half due to injury, came back in the second half and finished the game with two goals and as assist. Englert, a sophomore, was the leader of the Ladies' offense with four goals and an assist.

Abby Coleman all added two goals apiece for the Ladies.
Kenyon got out to a great start and posted early leads of 3-1 and 4-2. The Tigers then turned to Becca Joseph and Victoria Zysik to get back into the game. That combo helped Wittenberg tie the game at four, five and then seven at halftime.
When the teams returned for second-half play, Wittenberg's Cassie Kubasta gave the Tigers their first lead with a goal at the 27:35 mark. Symmes responded with two Kenyon goals at put the Ladies back in front, 10-9, with 17:02 left in the game.
Over the final 15 minutes of play, Wittenberg maintained momentum and outscored Kenyon 4-2 to steal the conference victory.
Wittenberg held a 39-25 advantage in shots over Kenyon, which struggled to clear the ball throughout the game. The Ladies went 12-of-21 on clear attempts and turned the ball over 20 times.
Kenyon, still in possession of its best record since the 2010 season, will now prepare for a trip to The College of Wooster for next Saturday's conference contest that starts at 1 p.m.
Sophomore Kat Englert scored four goals and had one assist Saturday, but a Wittenberg
goal with 29 seconds left in the game gave the visiting Tigers a 13-12 conference victory.
