WOOSTER, Ohio – Over the final 20 minutes of Saturday's women's lacrosse contest at The College of Wooster, the host Fighting Scots outscored the Kenyon College Ladies 5-2 to claim a 12-8 North Coast Athletic Conference win.
The loss for Kenyon (6-2, 0-2 NCAC) was its second in a row after starting the season with a six-game win streak. Wooster (8-1, 2-0 NCAC) started the season with seven straight wins, but suffered its first loss Thursday at home against Augustana. The Fighting Scots still sit atop the conference standings, tied with Oberlin College.
The Ladies were in control early, scoring the game's first four goals.
Kat Englert and
Allie McLane each scored once, while
Jane Symmes scored twice to put Kenyon ahead 4-0 at the mid-way point of the first half.
Between the Ladies' third and fourth goals, Symmes earned a draw control to tie the Kenyon career record of 239 draw controls set by Ali Lacavaro '99. Later in the half, Symmes broke the record and then added two more draw controls to give her 42 draw controls on the season and 242 for her career.
Meanwhile, Kenyon's defense held the Fighting Scots scoreless for more than 20 minutes. It wasn't until the 9:20 mark of the first half that Wooster recorded its first goal. Englert answered that goal with her second of the game, but Wooster then tallied six straight scores to take a 7-5 lead at halftime. Senior Abby Szlachta scored three times during the Wooster blitz, which spanned just a little more than three minutes of playing time.
A goal from freshman
Cassie Hudson-Heck at the 20:57 mark of the second half pulled Kenyon within one goal, but that would be as close as the Ladies would get. Wooster scored the next two goals and five of the next seven to claim victory.
Englert finished with three goals and an assist. Symmes had two goals and an assist. Hudson-Heck had two goals and McLane had a goal and an assist for the Ladies, who took a total of 28 shots at the Wooster net.
Szlachta and Heather Szymanski both rang up a game-high four goals for the Scots, who unloaded a total of 27 shots.
Kenyon keeper
Allie Dumas made seven saves in the loss, while her counterpart, Isabel Perman, made eight saves.
During the Ladies' 12-8 loss at The College of Wooster, senior Jane Symmes snared four
draw controls, giving her 42 on the season and a Kenyon-record total of 242 for her career.
