Lords sweep Quakers, run streak to six

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Kenyon College baseball team amassed 29 hits Tuesday and claimed victory at both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with the Wilmington College Quakers. The Lords needed 12 innings to pull out a 14-11 game-one win, but left little doubt in game two, as they rolled to a 12-4 triumph.

The two wins improved the Lords' win streak to six games and boosted the team's overall record to 12-5. The Kenyon men will now head into the bulk of their North Coast Athletic Conference schedule beginning with Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders at Hiram College.

Kenyon, which has now played in five extra-inning games this season and has won all but one of them, held a 10-5 lead in the fifth inning of game one. The Lords got to that point with three runs in the first inning, two in the third and five more runs in the fifth inning. Junior Phillip Nam had RBI hits in the first and third, sophomore Alec Manning ripped a two-run single in the first and freshman Jason Clebowicz uncorked a three-run homer to highlight the Lords' fifth inning.

With the Kenyon offense rolling along, the pitching started to go south. Five walks issued in the sixth and seventh innings allowed the Quakers to score five runs and tie things up a 10-10. Overall, five Kenyon pitchers served up ten game-one walks to the Quakers. They did, however, also strike out ten Quakers.

Freshman Matt Contreras hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to give Kenyon the lead again, but Wilmington answered in the bottom half of the inning to keep things going.

Sophomore Luke Calcei then took over on the mound for Kenyon. He pitched the next three innings without giving up a run. He walked two, fanned two and earned the win after the Lords capitalized on two Wilmington errors and scored three times in the top of the 12th inning. Sam Gillespie, normally a starter, then closed the door and earned his first save by retiring the Quakers in order.

Clebowicz was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI in game one. Contreras, Manning, Jackson Celestin, Matt von Roemer and Mikey Arman all added two hits each.

Because game one took nearly four hours to complete, game two was called after five innings due to darkness.

Gillespie, a senior, got back on the hill and pitched another four innings for Kenyon. Although he didn't have his best stuff, he still moved his season record to 5-0 by allowing four earned runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out six before freshman Ross Scheinberg finished things off with two more strikeouts in the fifth inning. For the season, Kenyon pitchers have combined to strike out 147 batters in a little more than 137 innings of work.

Meanwhile, the Kenyon bats kept pummeling Wilmington pitching. In game two, the Lords lit up the scoreboard with a seven-run second inning and a five-run third. Celestin, Clebowicz and Arman all doubled in the second inning and von Roemer tripled. In the third, Jono Chafe and Nam added a couple more doubles, while von Roemer and Andrew Petersdorf singled.

In that second game, von Roemer went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. For the day, he was 4-for-10 with five runs and three RBI. Celestin and Clebowicz also went 2-for-3 in game two. Celestin was a combined 4-for-9 with three runs and one RBI in the doubleheader. Clebowicz's two-game totals were 5-for-7 with three runs and four RBI. With those numbers added to their season totals, von Roemer now owns a .390 batting average, while Celestin and Clebowicz are at .372 and .323, respectively.
