ORLANDO, Fla. – Senior
Jane Symmes piled up eight points Tuesday and the Kenyon College Ladies lacrosse team rolled to a 15-0 season-opening win over the Alfred University Saxons on a neutral-site field at ESPN's Wide World of Sports.
Symmes' eight points came on team-best totals of four goals and four assists. Sophomore
Kat Englert added three goals to the Ladies' total, while junior
Allie McLane and freshman
Mary Grace Detmer tacked on two goals apiece. Along with Detmer, freshman
Cassie Hudson-Heck also recorded her first collegiate goal on Tuesday.
Kenyon (1-0) first scored 80 seconds into the contest. Hudson-Heck notched that goal on assist from Symmes. About three minutes later, Symmes set up a goal for fellow senior
Kelley Russell.
Englert scored twice before the half and so did Symmes, giving the Ladies an 8-0 lead at the break. Symmes then opened the second half with the first two goals and Englert followed up with another to give Kenyon an 11-0 advantage with about 25 minutes left in the game.
Symmes not only came up big on the offensive end, she also won nine draw controls, giving her 209 for her career and pulling her within 30 of Kenyon's all-time record of 239 set by Ali Lacavaro.
Defensively, the Ladies forced Alfred (0-1) into 24 turnovers and held the Saxons to just seven shots throughout the game. Sophomore goalkeeper
Allie Dumas had to make just five saves to record her first career win and her first career shutout.
Kenyon's solid play on both sides of the field allowed Coach
Meredith Buzzi to empty the bench and distribute playing time to the reserves at the earliest possible moment in the season.
The Ladies will get back on the road tomorrow and head north for Thursday's neutral-site game against Sewanee. The game will be played at Georgetown College and will get underway at 5 p.m.
