GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison University swept a North Coast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader over Kenyon College (13-10-1, 2-2 NCAC) Tuesday afternoon. Over the course of the two contests, the Ladies were held to just six hits and scored just one run.
GAME ONE
The Ladies were shut out for the first time all season and were limited to their second-fewest hit total (3) as the Big Red won 8-0 in five innings.
Denison wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as its plated four runs in the bottom of the first. Lauren Secaras started the scoring as she lined a shot off the glove of a leaping
Lindsey Susolik at first base allowing a runner to score. In the next plate appearance, Amanda Howell had a two-run double increasing the home team's lead to 3-0. Laura Bagan then capped off all the scoring with a run-scoring single.
Kenyon's offense never was able to get in gear after the first frame as they collected just two more hits on singles from
Nicole Horita and
Madi Maldonado in the second and third innings, respectively.
During the game, Big Red pitcher Sarah Herold struck out a trio of batters and allowed her defense to come up with nine flyouts and three groundouts.
The Big Red added a single run in the second and third innings before closing the game in the fifth as Ryan Lee connected with a double scoring Bagan and Ricki Asher.
Maldonado recorded two of the three Kenyon hits.
GAME TWO
A two-run fourth inning broke a 1-1 tie in favor of Denison in the second game as the Big Red got another stellar pitching effort from Herold while Secaras closed the affair for her second save of the year.
The Big Red got out to a 1-0 lead in the first frame as Secaras hit a two-out double to left field plating Herold.
Kenyon had its side retired through the first three innings before getting on the board in the fourth.
Jane Ghublikian led off the inning with a single and a few batters later Susolik hit her 12th two-out RBI of the season plating Ghublikian.
Denison then came up to bat in the home half of the inning and went up 3-1. With two outs, Kerry Hager doubled down the left-field line and brought McKinly Vazquez and Katie Nichols home.
Two innings later, the Ladies had an opportunity to tie the game. A Ghublikian double followed by a Maldonado walk brought a few defensive changes for Denison including turning to Secaras in relief. After a groundout by
Amanda Ogata and walk issued to Susolik which loaded the bases, Secaras got
Molly O'Connor out on a swinging third strike to end the threat.
Kenyon was then retired in order in the seventh to end the game.
Ghublikian tallied two hits for Kenyon while
Elizabeth Ovieda was tagged with the loss as she went six innings, scattered 10 hits and induced a total of 17 groundouts and flyouts.
The Ladies will stay on the road and play at Wittenberg University tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. conference doubleheader.
Madi Maldonado had two hits in the opener but as a whole the Kenyon offense was limited to just six total hits
as Denison swept the Ladies in a conference doubleheader.
